E non a torto, perché la musica che l’allora 36enne Ennio Morricone, nonostante le iniziali titubanze del regista, ha composto per “Per un pugno di dollari” è un torrente creativo ancora ineguagliato… I due si trovarono subito d'accordo su quali tematiche e su quale effetto doveva avere la musica sul film. A parere di Leone l'ideale sarebbe stato iniziare a lavorare alla musica contemporaneamente alla scrittura della sceneggiatura, per avere una maggiore influenza sulla caratterizzazione delle scene e dei personaggi. Nonostante il successo internazionale della colonna sonora, che è associata all'intero genere western, Morricone non l'apprezza particolarmente; secondo il compositore, infatti, “Per un pugno di dollari” è il peggior film di Leone e la peggior colonna sonora che abbia mai fatto.
