It's the second chapter of the trilogy of the animals which, in the early seventies, helped establish the reputation of the director, confirming it as one of the greatest thriller writers in Italy. It's the second film in which Argento has full autonomy about the subject, the script and director. The film went very well in theaters: it was a great success and the proceeds were double compared to "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage." Which, from that moment, it allowed the director to not meet more difficulties with co-producers and distributors for the realization and the release of the next film. The soundtrack was composed by Ennio Morricone, then already known for his work for westerns of Sergio Leone. If the previous soundtrack to the debut of Argento had proved largely impenetrable, here Morricone goes even further, creating a real sound, dissonant avant-garde, whose guidelines are made almost exclusively by a few, essential, bass lines. In those same years, moreover, the Master was an integral part of the improvisation group Nuova Consonanza, and the Dario Argento movies provided a perfect terrain in which expand a musical research virtually boundless. Like many other soundtracks of those years, "The cat o 'nine tails" had to wait more than 20 years to see the light in its entirety: When the film was released was published only a measly 45 rpm! “Il gatto a nove code” è un film giallo del 1971 diretto da Dario Argento. È il secondo capitolo della Trilogia degli animali che all'inizio degli anni settanta contribuì a consolidare la fama del regista, affermandolo come uno dei maggiori autori di thriller in Italia. È il secondo film nel quale Argento ha piena autonomia riguardo al soggetto, alla sceneggiatura e alla regia. Il film andò molto bene in sala: fu un gran successo e gli incassi furono doppi rispetto a “L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo”. Cosa che, da quel momento, permise al regista di non incontrare più difficoltà con i co-produttori e i distributori per la realizzazione e l'uscita di film successivi. La colonna sonora fu composta da Ennio Morricone, all'epoca già noto grazie al suo lavoro per i western di Sergio Leone. Se già la precedente per l'esordio di Argento si era rivelata in gran parte ostica, qui Morricone si spinge ancora oltre, realizzando una vera e propria sonorizzazione avanguardistica e dissonante, le cui linee guida sono costituite quasi esclusivamente da poche, essenziali, note di basso. In quegli stessi anni, del resto, il Maestro era parte integrante del Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, e le pellicole di Dario Argento fornivano un terreno perfetto in cui espandere una ricerca musicale virtualmente senza confini. Come molte altre colonne sonore di quegli anni, "Il gatto a nove code" dovette attendere più di 20 anni per vedere la luce nella sua interezza: quando il film uscì nelle sale fu pubblicato solo un misero 45 giri!
