Johansson in Serbia to launch Frontex operation

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson will travel to Serbia on Thursday for a two-day visit to promote closer cooperation in migration management and security, https://eudebates.tv/ as part of Belgrade's EU accession talks, and to launch a joint operation between EU border agency Frontex and Serbian border guards, said a statement by the European Commission. On Thursday afternoon Johansson will meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and European Integration Minister Jadranka Joksimovic, as well as representatives from civil society organisations. Vucic stated that the EU provided 11 million euros of support to Serbia in the immigrant crisis and said, “Serbia prevented the illegal passage of 38,226 immigrants this year. There are many people who try to illegally migrate, especially from Bulgaria and North Macedonia.” Vucic added, 3,977 people remained in the immigration centers in Serbia and noted that his country has always been hospitable to immigrants. Johansson also stated that an agreement worth 2.5 million euros was signed with Serbia on aid to immigrants and said, “Serbia has shown that it is a reliable partner from the very beginning of the immigrant crisis. Migration is something that no country can handle alone.” Stating that he will also visit the Serbia–Bulgaria border tomorrow, Johansson emphasized that Serbia should continue to fulfill its responsibilities in the EU membership process. The agreement on EU assistance to Serbia was signed between Serbian Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic, EU Delegation Head to Serbia Sem Fabrizi, and International Organization for Migration (IOM) Serbian Representative Lidija Markovic.
