Thefts are on the rise in Chattanooga, and they are targeting cars. In the first six months of 2021, catalytic converter thefts in the city had risen almost 400%, compared to the entire previous year, according to a press release from the Chattanooga Police Department. On July 1st, Tennessee passed a law in an effort to reduce theft and put more restrictions on selling and purchasing catalytic converters. The law states that anyone who purchases a used catalytic converter must give written notice to the police, be registered as a scrap metal dealer and make the deal in person, with a copy of the seller's identification.
