The MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai) will issue stop-work notices to builders, followed by penal action, if they fail to initiate measures to control dust generated from construction sites. Civic action will follow if builders fail to self- certify that a construction site meets dust mitigation guidelines like erecting metal sheets around the periphery of construction sites, water-fogging during excavation and loading/unloading construction material and sprinkling of soil strata before excavation starts. Under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, the offence attracts punishment ranging from one month to three years in jail. Mumbai has become a big construction site, and BMC is now trying to curb dust pollution by setting strict guidelines for builders. Do you think this is the right step taken by the municipality? Do you’ll think this will improve Mumbai’s Air Quality Index?
