Abu Zafar Obaidullah, a Bangladeshi poet who born at Babugang Upazilla of Barisal District on 8 February, 1934. His father Justice Abdul Jabbar Khan was a former speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly. Abu Zafar Obaidullah received his primary education from Mymensingh where his father was working as the district judge. The poet completed his matriculation examination from the Mymensingh Zilla High School and Intermediate from Dhaka college in Arts. Then, he got himself admitted at the department of English, in the University of Dhaka. After completing his B A (honours) and MA, the poet joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1957. He was promoted as the secretary of Bangladesh Government in 1976 and retired in 1982. After retirement, he became the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources. He also served as the Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the United States of America. In 1992, he started working for FAO Regional Office in Bangkok. Journalist Enayetullah Khan and Politician Rashed Khan Menon are his younger brothers and writer Selima Rahman is his sister. Aami-Kingbodontir-Kathaa Bolchi and Bristi O Shahosi Purush-er Jonyo Pranthona are his two long poems which became famous after their publication in 1970s. Abu Zafar Obaidullah participated in the language movement in 1952 and his poem "Kono Ek Ma-key" ("To a Mother") is recited in every 21st February in Central Shahid Minar. Ordinary people’s lives and dreams as well as the Liberation movement of Bangladesh become the subject matter of the poem written by Abu Zafar Obaidullah. He was awarded Ekushey Padak (1985) Bangla Academy Literary Award (1979) for his contribution in Bengali literary creation.
