Russia has only one overseas naval base, and it's located in Tartus, Syria. Host Anna Knishenko was one just a handful of journalists who has been allowed to visit the facility. Since Russia began its military operation in Syria in 2015, Tartus has been the main gateway for delivering arms and supplies to Khmeimim Air Base.
Tartus can accommodate huge bulk carriers and host several warships at the same time. Russia’s Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier and Orekhovo-Zuevo Buyan-class corvette are among its ships posted in Tartus. The Orekhovo-Zuevo missile corvette is equipped with a range of artillery weapons, including a 100mm cannon and Kalibr missiles.
The Tartus base is guarded by Russia’s S-300 and S-400 missile systems.
