This is a scratch built Lunar Module constructed around a 450 size drone so it can actually fly. It stands 1.5 feet tall and 2 feet wide at the pads. Weighs in at 5 pounds and eats up 4000 mah batteries in 3 minutes.
This video contains the story of the build process with before, during and after photos of the lunar lander being constructed. I also have some flight video as that is the big payoff for all the work.
I'm old enough to remember the Apollo missions and this ship is as ugly as ever, but still one of the coolest. Watching this model of the lunar module fly helps the imagination picture what the real thing must have looked like. I'm hoping we go back again in my life time with HD cameras rolling.
This Lunar Module was made from 4 sheets of white foam board, 6 sticks of hot glue, clear hose, zip ties, kabob skewers, a little paint, foil wrapping paper and about 80 hours of work.
I learned many of my construction techniques from building other scratch built RC aircraft designed by the guys over at FliteTest. Big thanks for all the How-To videos and the encouragement to try a design of my own.

@wolfhound1132 years agoThis looks amazing, seeing an LM fly. But it took a minute before I realised why. The reason is that there is no footage of a full LM in flight. LM's never flew here on Earth - they can't. They flew around before landing on the moon of course, but there was no-one with a camera to film them. Amazing. Well done, and thank you. ...1

@tvre0last yearNote: at the end in the flight footage, you had a “source” label with the acronym “LEM” meaning lunar excursion module. This was initially used in development, but NASA later simplified the acronym to LM, or lunar module.

@user-kn6sz8ji1j2 years agoBill, your Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) drone is both unique and clever. You may want to get it patented. I saw a full-size LEM at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. It was huge. The ultimate would be an upscale version. I remember a guy wearing a jetpack that was the halftime show of a Super Bowl. He flew into the stadium and landed on the 50 yard line. Now, if a Lunar Module landed on the 50 yard line that would be even cooler. Then again, a version for that person who always has to have the first of everything would be interesting. Can you imagine the buzz around the water cooler when you land next to your boss's Tesla, then meander down the ladder and plant the American flag outside his office window? Wouldn't that be something! ...
