2021 Toyota Sienna Minivan review | Toyota Sienna 2021 9 Seater MPV | Toyota Sienna : We're thrilled to finally get a fourth-generation Sienna, and Toyota really put in the work to improve its popular people-mover. The bullet-train styling can take some getting used to, but step inside and you'll find an impressive cabin. There are plenty of thoughtful storage solutions and the combination of sliding second-row seats and an available ottoman deliver convincing luxo-jet vibes. That said, the third row's tiny windows can make that space feel claustrophobic. The new standard hybrid powertrain is exceptionally efficient. Driving the new van is reminiscent of a Prius, though, in the way that it sacrifices some engine and ride quality refinement for ultimate efficiency. It lost a comparison to the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in due in part to that van's superior ride and clever seat storage. Performance and Fuel Economy chevron The 2021 Sienna's biggest change is its switch from a V-6 to a four-cylinder hybrid drivetrain, which is standard on all trims. The powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors that send power through a CVT automatic for FWD or, when equipped with a third electric motor, AWD. Total system horsepower comes to 243 hp. Resultant fuel economy is impressive; EPA numbers read 35-36/36 mpg city/highway, compared to 18-19/24-26 mpg in the outgoing Sienna. 2021 Sienna vs. 2020 Sienna: What's the Difference? chevron The powertrain is the most significant difference. Whereas the third-gen Sienna utilized a 3.5-liter V-6, the 2021 Sienna downsizes the engine to a 2.5-liter four augmented by electric motors. Both offer FWD as standard with available AWD. The outgoing Sienna produced 296 hp and featured an eight-speed automatic; the new car makes 243 hp and works with a CVT. The hybrid component will make a significant difference in efficiency. Toyota claims the new model will achieve 33 mpg combined, much better than the 2020 Sienna's 21 mpg combined. Both vehicles are rated at the same 3,500-pound maximum towing capacity. The 2020 Sienna's 7.0-inch touchscreen is replaced by a 9.0-inch unit on all 2021 models. The new model line also drops the entry-level L trim, which will likely result in a significantly higher base price. Safety chevron It hasn't yet been evaluated by the NHTSA or the IIHS, but Toyota will equip all 2021 Siennas with its Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 collection of active safety features. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist with lane centering, automatic high-beams, and road sign assist are all standard, as are blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Cargo Space and Interior Room chevron We haven't heard much about the new Sienna's cargo volume or interior space at this point, but we'll share with you what we know. Sienna LE and XLE will come equipped with seating for eight and a second-row bench. Certain XLE models plus XSE, Limited, and Platinum equip Super Long Slide second-row captain's chairs that offer 25 inches for fore-aft adjustment. If you opt for the Limited or Platinum trim with FWD, second-row passengers are treated to ottomans for resting their feet. Technology chevron All 2021 Siennas will equip a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Satellite radio and Wi-Fi hot spot capability are also included. The base audio system is a six-speaker unit, XLE models get an eight-speaker system, and Limited and Platinum Siennas include 12-speaker JBL premium audio with integrated navigation. Platinum models also add a 360-degree camera system and a 10.0-inch head-up display.
